I care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself. I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing. ~Michel de Montaigne
I think we all have a little voice inside us that will guide us. It may be God, I don't know. But I think that if we shut out all the noise and clutter from our lives and listen to that voice, it will tell us the right thing to do. ~Christopher Reeves
If everyone listened to their own “voice” inside of them and then block out all the other voices from other people they will do good things instead of bad things. The quote by Christopher Reeves is a good quote because if you listen to bad people you will do bad things, but if you listen to yourself you will more than likely do the right thing. Everyone should follow the quote in my opinion, but I think the politicians and rulers should listen to this quote more than others. The reason I think this is because instead of doing all the “dirty” things politicians do sometimes would be greatly reduced if they would just listen to their own “voice”. Sometimes I think that majority of the crimes committed are from people telling other people to do things for them. I think most crimes could be prevented if people would just not do them because they want to be cool. I also think that if everyone did their own thing instead of listening to others the world would be a much better place.
ReplyDeletePeople who follow this quote are usually the “better” people of communities, but this is not always true because some people get enjoyment out of doing bad things. In conclusion, if everyone does their own thing and stops listening to others about how to live their life, this world would be a better place.
I think we all have a little voice inside us that will guide us. It may be God, I don't know. But I think that if we shut out all the noise and clutter from our lives and listen to that voice, it will tell us the right thing to do. ~Christopher Reeves. Christopher Reeves quote really jumped out to me. In life this happens a lot, especially when you are in a big game in a sport, and the buzzer is about to go off and your trying to concentrate on shooting the ball but everyone is being so loud. As a result you win the game but in was really hard, but you are so proud of yourself at the same time. So when you here the little voices inside your head, make sure that you pick the right one. It may be hard, but I am sure you can do it. Therefore I don’t make many good decisions other people can. I really do not know what I am saying, but this really sucks. In order to do some things right you have to listen to the voices inside your head. In conclusion this really sucked and I Am about done with this And just make the right decision when listening to the voices inside your head.
ReplyDeleteI care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself. I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing. ~Michel de Montaigne This guy I think is saying he is responsible, and he will not depend on others for things that he can get on his own. For example: Money. “I will be rich by myself..” meaning he will gain money on his own. He will get a job, support himself, and no one can say they helped him financially. “…and not by borrowing.” Apparently he is not going to borrow from friends, family, or anybody. This quote is for anyone, and everyone. Although times may get hard, believe in yourself, and know nothing is impossible. You don’t need to borrow all the time. If all you do is borrow, the only thing you would have done on your own would have been to borrow! Perhaps one should read this quote over and over again until they realize what it says. At the same time, ask theselves if they are responsible and can take care of themselves instead of using their parents for it all. Certainly this quote by Michel de Montaigne is saying he doesn’t care what people think of him, or see him as. He cares more towards what he thinks of himself, and what he sees in himself. Live, laugh, love may have something to do with this quote, or it may not. Conclusively, I think this quote means respect yourself, and be responsible.

ReplyDeleteThis quote by Christopher Reeves has left me with mixed feelings. This quote is true to a certain extent, but this quote also I believe is false. Even if people believe something must be either right or wrong, but never both, I believe otherwise. In all, people are always going to be influenced by their lives, and people will feel the need to listen to that. Because of this, people need to sort out what is good and what is harmful. If a person only goes by their inner voice, I believe it may lead them down the wrong path. Certainly a person’s inner voice is not all bad, but that voice has to be influenced by something. A person’s inner voice is influenced by the outside world. However, I am not saying that if the person lives in harsh surroundings that the little voice must be bad. What I am saying is that a person’s little voice is influenced by experiences, even if it is subconsciously. Equally though, I believe that sometimes that little voice does know best, and that voice somehow tells you to do the right thing. This voice works in a mysterious way, for that even if you are a “trouble-maker”, the voice urges you to do the right thing. At any rate, I still believe something can be just as right as it is wrong, and I still feel this quote could fit either way.
Personally, I think that the quote by Christopher Reeves isn’t true. For example, I believe that our friends and family are there to guide us. As for the “little voice” in our head, we should care more about the “little voice” in our heart. Certainly, everyone has heard the quote, “follow your heart.” As for telling us the right thing to do, some people don’t know wrong from right. And if the “little voice” is, in reality speaking, your thoughts, then sometimes they will lead you off track. By comparison, take Nikki Sixx. After reading his book, The Heroin Diaries: A Year In The Life of a Shattered Rockstar, I learned a lot about listening to friends and family. Nikki grew up in a tough childhood, and his mind told him the only way out was heroin. He would try to quit, but his “little voice” wouldn’t let him. It would tell him that he couldn’t live without smack, and that he needed it. Apparently, his “little voice” was wrong. After all, he did quit after a little help from his friends. Therefore, it proves my point why I disagree with this particular quote. We don’t need voices in our heads to direct us the way we should go. All we need is friends and family to help us through tough times.
ReplyDeleteJust be you, and that’s all that matters. “I care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself. I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing.” ~Michel de Montaigne. This quote is very meaningful to me in many ways, so I will explain some. First of all I don’t care if someone thinks I’m weird, or not. That is there choice and therefore it shouldn’t matter to me. However I think that if someone is going to judge they need to think about if first. Saying certain things to certain people can hurt, and for some there is no affect.
ReplyDeleteSince I think that I am creative and special in my own way, does it matter if someone disagrees? In my opinion I don’t think so, it shouldn’t matter if you feel good about yourself! There are many people that judge because maybe it makes them feel better, cool, or they have insecurity about themselves. Actually I think those are certainly dumb reasons to make someone feel less about them. Like Michel de Montaigne said “I care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself.” My example is that if you are very tall, you could play basketball. For example people might call you “tree”, “freak” something of that sort, but yeah, at least you could be the best post for the team! So there is always a plus!
Michel de Montaigne’s quote “I care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself. I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing” has a meaning that almost everyone should listen to. He is saying to not care what others think. At the same time he is saying to only care about what you think of yourself. After all isn’t the self-opinion the only one that matters? Also we should not “borrow” others’ opinions about us, for it will only change the way we think. In the same way it would be wise to not share opinions of others, and that way people can think what they want of themselves. In spite of that compliments are not such a problem, but they could give someone a big head. That, too, would be a bad scenario. Which is worse, giving someone a compliment and having them think they are better than they really are, or insulting someone and making them lose their self-esteem? In any case caring about what others think can affect our lives. Under such circumstances, I try not to listen to other people’s opinions. Personally I would not want a big or head or low self-esteem. Knowing people that suffer from both only makes me want to keep a level head on my shoulders even more. Michel de Montaigne says it right when it comes to caring what other people think.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Jesseca, our family and friends ARE a guide for us. And Alexis you and I are on the same page. I do think the quote from Michel is about respect and responsibility.
ReplyDeleteI care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself. I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing. ~Michel de Montaigne
ReplyDeleteEveryone has different opinions about something whether it’s me, someone I know, or anything people are always judging, but I’m not really one to care what people think about me. In spite of that people have told me that they dislike me or, don’t want to talk to me. Admittedly I could careless but I still try no to disrespect them in anyway.
With regard to not barrowing I think it’s dumb to act like someone else. As we have people acting like Justin Bieber or another celebrity just because they look cool and they think they can be just as cool as them. That just shows how insecure and the lack of respect someone has for them self. You should be proud of how you look and act don’t try to change it because, some one said something about how you look or dress. Of course small changes are fine like wearing your favorite athletes basketball or football or baseball jersey but it get pretty stupid when people start dyeing their hair to look like Hannah Montana or some superstar singer. Just be proud to be you. Let people like you for who you really are
Christopher Reeves’ quote really spoke to me, and I feel like I can really relate to it. From what I comprehend, his quote is saying to trust that little voice that you hear inside yourself and don’t let anyone change what you think. In situations where I know there could be hard decisions to make I always have a “gut” feeling that tells me what is the right thing to do. However I don’t always listen to that voice inside me due to factors that influence me. For instance, when deciding what career path to take you may have many people voicing their opinion, so you may not listen to what your heart is telling you to do. However, if you really take the time to listen to what your heart tells you it will almost all the time be the one that is the right thing to do. In spite of that, I don’t always listen to that voice inside, and I make wrong decisions and get in to some trouble. Admittedly, I have made many wrong decisions. Provided that, I think that people sometimes need to make the wrong decision, and they should not always listen to that voice within them. Learning from mistakes is how people grow to become a better person. Really, if everyone does everything perfect then they don’t have anything to live by, nor will they have anything to base future decisions off of. That being said, I feel that his words are very inspirational and speak a lot of truth.
ReplyDeleteI think we all have a little voice inside us that will guide us. It may be God, I don't know. But I think that if we shut out all the noise and clutter from our lives and listen to that voice, it will tell is the right thing to do.
ReplyDelete-Christopher Reeves
I think that Reeves is trying to say, is to just let go and be your self, because if you don’t you might loss that voice inside, and do all the wrong things others tell you.
Like when I had to drop out of school, I felt that I should try my best to just go back but I didn’t until senior yr and I regret not listening to the part of me that told me to just go back junior yr. But now that I am back I feel like I shouldn’t give up now, just do the best I can.
But all in all I think Reeves is trying to say just don’t give up and be your self and fallow that little voice inside of you and don’t listen to all the wrong things in life. All you can do is be unique in your own way. Never back down from what you feel is right. And don’t be like everyone else.
Never hide your true feelings because one day your feeling may be well worth telling or showing. Always try your best no matter if someone tells you your wrong.
Everything will turn out how it was meant to be if you just do what you feel is right.
Overcome everything. One day everyone will face that choice to listen to your self or listen you others.
austin that was very well put how some people need to worry about them selfs more
ReplyDeleteI chose Christopher Reeves’s quote because his words are something that I should listen to. He says that the only person that can help me is me, and I should try to help myself instead of depending on everyone else’s advice. Although my friends know who I am, they do not think like me, nor do they know what is the best choice for me. I need to be my own leader and trust myself to know what to do. Everyone thinks they know what’s best for me, but do they? How do they know how much a decision might hurt me? How do they know if I can live with myself after it? The truth is my decision should be based on what I know is right and what will make me happy. For example, last year I found out that I had scoliosis. My spine is not straight, my shoulders are uneven, and there is no way to fix it. However, my mom did not want to believe that. We went from doctor to doctor to see if there was anything I could do to correct it, but nobody had an answer. By this time, I was starting to realize how this might affect my life. Although my back did not hurt much, physical activity like weight lifting and volleyball could make my back worse to the point I would need surgery. I could use this as an excuse, play it safe, and quit something I love. I could be miserable now and not live, or I could take a chance and follow my dreams. Overall, I chose to trust that I could handle the stress and not let what might happen tomorrow change what I do today.
ReplyDeletei agree with u on how the quote gave you mixed feelings that why u didnt blog about it
ReplyDeleteI agree with Justin's comment. I think that you need to focus on what your heart tells you to do, if its wrong then you can learn from your mistake.
ReplyDeleteI chose the quote by Christopher Reeves to write about. Briefly, it talks about having a voice inside to guide us, and the ability to shut out the noise. Today, there are many influences on us that try to tell us what is right and wrong. In this event, we may lose sight of what we are aiming for and what our goals are in life. For example, what I want to do with my life. Apparently moving to Florida and being a marine biologist is not realistic. Not only is moving far away inconvenient, but also the demand for marine biologists is not high. However, I need to shut out the noise, and still the voice inside me says to follow my dreams. If I listened to the clutter around me, I would go to Ashford University and get my nursing degree. When I hear that idea, it does not sound so bad. Getting into Ashford would be easy, and the demand for nurses is high. Yet when I think about what I want to do, it always will come back to my dream job. In summary, you have to listen to that voice inside of your head, and not all of the noise and people around you. If you listen to the noise, you will soon find yourself in a place or situation that other people want you in, instead of where you want to be. All in all, Christopher Reeves is right, shut out the noise and listen to your voice.
ReplyDeleteI care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself. I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing. ~Michel de Montaigne
ReplyDeleteThis statement is both good and bad. It is agreeable that we need to depend less on others and be able to support ourselves, but we can’t be completely selfish and only support ourselves when others need us. This guy talks like he’s been screwed by the world and now he wants to shell up and better himself. However he may become better, he should teach that to other people so they can be better. If he has a problem with how something works he should fix it not run and just be better then it himself. If he doesn’t believe in borrowing that’s fine, but it doesn’t mean he can’t lend to others. In other words, he needs to get off his high horse in my opinion. Selfishness gets you nowhere in the long term of things. Once you have yourself developed, help others and you might end up bettering yourself along the way. What he could also mean is he lives by the “ I’m rubber your glue” saying, but that only really fits the first sentence. Whatever way I look at it I think this guy might’ve had a good idea but he went about it the wrong way. He might think he’s right at the time but he will figure out he needs to make a change. That is why I don’t completely agree with this quote.
I care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself. I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing.
ReplyDelete~Michel de Montaigne
In this quote, I can relate because when I was a freshman I didn’t really care what other people thought of me I just did whatever I wanted and hung out with my friends. I’m still kind of that way now, but I just don’t really talk to as much people as I did in Clinton. That was mainly because Clinton is such a bigger school and town though.
When he says, “I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing.” I’m not exactly sure what he means metaphorically, but I think he’s trying to say that he could do fine on his own with no help from others. When I’m old enough to actually move out I wouldn’t want to have to borrow money just to get my own place I’d rather pay for it myself, so that my family knows I could make it on my own.
Michel de Montaigne’s quote is really short, simple, and to the point, unlike Christopher Reeve’s quote, Michel is not trying to explain the whole thing specifically. He’s kind of smooth with his words, yet still sort of has you figure out what he means. Even though Michel de Montaigne’s quote isn’t “something to live by” he still seems like a very wise guy, who really knows what he’s talking about.
Justin H: I agree with what you said about politicians needing to follow the quote.
ReplyDeleteSantana: I agree with what you said about just letting go and being yourself.
I also agree with dylan. Do what makes you happy, and do it for yourself and not for what others may think.
ReplyDeleteThis quote makes you think about whom you should listen to more of in your life. “I think we all have a little voice inside us that will guide us. It may be God, I don't know. But I think that if we shut out all the noise and clutter from our lives and listen to that voice, it will tell us the right thing to do.” ~Christopher Reeves. For one a person should always do what they think is right. But sometimes a person will get pressured by other people to do things that are probably wrong. In life people get so busy and forget to stop and, think about what they are doing. When life is cluttered you forget about the real important things. When a person stops to think they finally can make their own decisions instead of listening to others. Then again some people do point us in the right direction in life. Some of those people can be the most influential. The best part about a person like that you can trust no matter what. I personally think that little voice is our conscience. That tells us what to do in situations. Sometimes a person just stops and takes the time to think about the answer will become clear. But as the quote may refer to God. Some people may like to think that someone is pointing them in the right direction in life. Hopefully this quote will make you think of whom you will listen to next.

ReplyDeleteIn my minds kids are taught early in life, so maybe a parent has taken the time to teach them. Some school days I wake up and feel like I should skip school. On the other hand, the voice tells me inside get – up “Cody”. After all, make up work is no fun to have so much of when you come back. Besides that I would have to convince my mom or dad that I am sick. Furthermore, my sister or brother might tell on me. Then I would really be in a mess. Sense I have never attempted this trick in high school I am not sure I would be able to pull it off. If I do start skipping school people will start not believing me. Now the teachers at school have been able to trust me. I don’t want to not have my teachers believe me. I was taught to tell the truth from my mom and dad and work hard. If I do this I will be ok and my life will be good. If you screw up to have to try to get people to still believe you and sometimes they don’t.
