A person must do things they believe they cannot because it will only make them greater. To me this quote means that a person who tries something they think they cannot do will benefit by the experience. I can relate this to my life in many aspects. My most current activity I could relate this to is volleyball. I may not be the tallest front row player, but that does not stop me from trying to block every ball. I know if I did not try, I would never get better, but only worse. Volleyball is a game of improving, and if I never tried something I thought I could not do, then I would not be where I am now. At the beginning of freshmen year I could not jump set, jump serve, or pass as well as I would like to. Now that I have tried something I believed I could not do, I am a better player, and I feel more confident when I am on the court.

Not only does volleyball in my life relate to this quote, but so does finding a job over the summer. I knew I had the capability of getting a job; it was just whether or not I would be good at it, and still live a somewhat normal teenage life. I have currently been working at Wendy’s for almost three months, and I received the rookie of the month award my first month working there. When I started, I was nervous to learn sandwiches because I was not confident enough to think I could memorize the combinations. Normally people do not start off on sandwiches until about a month into working, but I started on the second week. Even though this is just something little, I still think it made me a better person because I did get the sandwiches memorized, and then had the opportunity to advance in my job.

I believe even if it is something big or something little you think you cannot do, you should still try because in the end, it WILL make you a better person.

  2. I chose the second quote because I have always thought of myself as a loner. Yeah I have a group of friends but I keep it a small group because I don’t like to depend on other people. I keep to a small group of friends because first off the smaller the group the less good byes I have to make when the end comes, second off I get nervous and agitated when I get in a large group of people because I’m always getting cut off and interrupted. I love the comfort of being alone there is nothing better to me than being alone in my room to do whatever I please, say what is on my mind, just be myself, or sit in the quietness and just read. I have little brothers that visit every other weekend and two things become almost impossible when they are there and that is reading and sleeping, I can’t concentrate to read because they are always bickering back and forth and its impossible to sleep because they are on their Ipods or the computer so there is always that noise to disturb me. Another thing that comforts me while I am alone that is always bothered when other people are around, playing video games. I can get by with a little noise when I’m reading and sleeping but I can’t stand it when there is someone over my shoulder questioning every thing I do in the game or giving me “hints” and “tips” that I already know. Well the second quote talked about team work I like my alone time where I can just kick back and relax but if you think I’m selfish your dead wrong because I can do the whole teamwork thing sometimes too.

  3. "You must do the things you think you cannot do" -Eleanor Roosevelt

This quote by Eleanor Roosevelt is an inspiring quote. What she is trying to get across to the reader is that you must push yourself to do what you think is impossible. There have been many examples of this quote that hold true to my life. For example, the 12 year old state baseball tournament. When we went there, we had no intentions of winning this tournament. However, as the week went on, we kept winning. We started believing in ourselves, knowing that we had a chance. We did end up winning the tournament, doing what we once thought to be impossible. Another example that holds true to this quote is my experience playing golf. When I started out, everyone told me that golf was harder than it appeared to be. This made me nervous. I figured I would be terrible. My confidence was destroyed. As I went to the course with my friends, I had no clue what I was doing. My first swing brought back some of my confidence. My drive was amazing, within ten yards of the whole. It took two puts to par the hole. At one point, I did not believe in myself. Turns out, I should have trusted myself a little more. To sum it up, believe in yourself. Try new things. Whether you take up a new sport, learn to canoe, play a competitive game, fly an airplane, or whatever it may be. Have some confidence. You never know how good you may be until you give it a try.

  4. The quote, "You must do the things you think you cannot do" by Eleanor Roosevelt, has a true meaning to many people. To me it means you don’t know what you can do until you try. For instance in volleyball, there are some spikes that I think I can’t dig up. That usually results in me not trying very hard to get to it, but the one time I did try, I got it. I did something I didn’t think I could. Another example in my life would be doing flips on a trampoline. I always thought I’d never be able to do it, but eventually with enough courage I finally got it. When I hear a song that I think would be cool to learn on the piano, often times when I look up how to play it, I give up and say I can’t because it’s too hard. Most of the time I just give up on it and forget about it, but sometimes I keep trying to learn it, and I eventually get it. I wanted to learn modern songs, ones by Eminem or B.O.B, and I did. If I were to think I can’t do something, and just never try to do it, I wont get very far in life. I’ll never fully know the things I can and cannot do. Anyone can make it through life believing they can’t do things, and their life will be pretty normal, but to life a full life and enjoy it, it takes trying to do things, even if you think you cant.

  5. The quote by Eleanor Roosevelt relates to me in many ways. There have been a lot of things that I thought I couldn’t do, but when I tried them, I achieved what I was aiming for. For example, when I tried color guard for the first time. I thought I couldn’t do it, no matter how hard I tried. Then, I kept trying and eventually got the hang of it. I put my mind to it and even ended up memorizing it on time. Now Ms. Horst always says that color guard needs my ability or it wouldn’t be as good without me, which is always nice to hear. Another example is art. When I start a project in art, I always start of really well with the outline of the picture. Then, as I get into detail, it gets harder and I get frustrated with it. After giving up numerous amounts of times, I go back to my unfinished work and decide to try it again. I relax and think about it harder and put my pencil on the paper. When I get done, I don’t get too disappointed in myself. My work will never be perfect, but everyone makes mistakes. So the quote that Eleanor Roosevelt takes place a lot in my life. When I set my mind to things, I eventually succeed. I’m proud of myself every time I do something I tried really hard at, and to me, that is the best feeling in the world.

"You must do the things you think you cannot do" ~Eleanor Roosevelt

I think this quote is important to anyone’s life. For me, it’s important because I believe that you must challenge yourself to be better. You must go outside your comfort zone to expand it and know what your actually capable of. We see an obstacle in life and usually instead of taking it head on we either find a way around it or turn around and point ourselves in another direction. At the time we see this as a good thing that we can keep going without extra effort, but if you would conquer the obstacle you’d be better, smarter, and more able then you were at the starting point of the problem. Eleanor Roosevelt’s husband had polio, yet he led a nation and stood when others said he could. With this attitude he became one of our country’s greatest leaders and got us through one of the toughest wars we will ever fight. It was this attitude that earned him respect and allowed him to lead a powerful nation with his disability. Eleanor probably either said this to motivate her husband or thought of it because he inspired her with his attitude. Either way I agree with it one hundred percent. The only way we get better is to do things we think or know we can’t do. Accomplishing them and overcoming them gives us one more thing we’ve done, can do, and can teach someone when they think they can’t do it. Following this leads to being better and helping others be better.

  7. This quote by Eleanor Roosevelt “You must do things you think you cannot do” has a meaning that everyone can relate to, including me. I myself can relate to this quote. It is like saying “you never know until you try.” I tend to get it in my head that I cannot do something, or will not be good at something I do. I like to try new things though, so those negative thoughts do not affect me or hold me back. This past summer is a good example of me doing something I thought I would not be able to accomplish. My family got a new horse that still needed to be worked with. I told my parents that I would be the one to work with the horse. Not sure if I would actually be able to break the horse to where it needed to be, I tried it anyway. I worked with the horse everyday for a few weeks. It did not take long for my parents to notice that I was getting the job done and the horse was improving. I no longer work with that horse, but now I know that I can help my parents work with new horses. So, I believe this quote relates to that experience because I did something I thought I could not do. If we never even try to do something we will never know if we actually can do it. Besides, it is worth the experience. Would you rather say you did something you thought you could not, or that you knew you could not so you did not even try?

  9. “Individual commitment to a group effort -- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” ~Vince Lombardi. I relate to this quote because I love sports and playing on a team. In order for a team to be successful, everyone on that team must do their job. Every position has a different job on the team to do. In football everybody has a certain assignment to do. If everyone does their assignment correctly then the play will be successful. If one person doesn’t do their job then the play will be unsuccessful. All it takes is one person out of the whole team to mess up and it can mess up the whole play. On offense, the backs have linemen to block for them and keep the defense from getting at them. If all but one lineman on the team blocks that still won’t be good enough because the one guy who didn’t get blocked could make the tackle and end the game. On defense, everyone has a certain area. If the offense runs the ball in the area and the defender misses the tackle then the offense could take that play for a big run if no other defender gets to that defenders area. On pass defense if the offense sends out four receivers and three out of the four receivers are covered that’s still not good enough because that one uncovered guy could catch the pass and take it for a touchdown. Being part of a team is all about doing your part on the team to make it work. That’s what teamwork is all about. So it doesn’t surprise me that this quote came from the greatest football coach of all time, Vince Lombardi.

This is a great quote it makes you wanna do something that you think u cannot do but you may actually be able to do. What is it about those people that can say something that can inspire someone in just those few simple words.
There are a couple times were i could have used this. Like the time that I was at Six Flags with my best bud an it was my first roller coaster i was so scared that I could not move an inch but when they kept on telling me how fun it was I had to go and it was a blast we went on just about ever roller coaster in the park. Now i love roller coasters.
There was another time last year in football where I broke my hand and it hurt so bad but i needed to play because nobody could take my spot. I wanted to cry everytime I hit someone but I could not give up i had to push on we did not win or even come close but i gave it all and left it all on the field.I did not go get a cast just so I could play the next game. It hurt everytime but it was worth it I would do it again anyday.
Another time when I gutted my first deer i was four and I thought it would be cool to gut the deer. It was bad I had to stick my hands all the way to the bottom and pull the guts out I thought I was going to hurl my guts out. But i did not and after that I can eat something and gut a deer at the same time.

  11. "You must do things you think you cannot do." -Eleanor Roosevelt

I relate to this somehow because after high school I plan on joining the air force, but I’m really scared of heights. I decided that I wanted to join the air force because I like to travel and see new places, also I think it would be quite a rush for me even though its against anything you’d think I would do, if you knew me. I believe that if you don’t try out new things and only do things you’re good at, because it’s the only thing you have ever really known, then your life would be boring. If someone asked, “Hey, what’s new” you would only be able to answer with “not much”. If you do something you think you can’t do and you do it over and over until you do eventually get it right then it will become something you do know how to do, so then you can move on to another thing you didn’t think you could do. When I was younger I would always try to do something I couldn’t do so I would hangout with the boys. Sometimes I wouldn’t be able to do what they did, but I still tried. One time I remember my uncle wasn’t able to beat a part in a video game and he got all mad so I tried to beat it even though I knew I wouldn’t be able to, and I was right, I did not succeed at all.

  12. "You must do the things you think you cannot do" ~Eleanor Roosevelt

This is a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt is very meaningful and tells you that if you do stuff you know you can do. You wont go anywhere you have to take a risk and try something you haven’t either tried before or tried and failed so you just try it again. Like one time while I was running I though I could jump right into doing four miles and boy was I wrong. I stopped at about two and half and walked home. And then I just kept running and as I got more in shape I was able to run farther I got the four miles about midsummer last year I enjoy running it now it gives me time to think and be by myself. When I am not busy later after I run I will stop at one of my neighbor’s house its bout half way she always gives me a glass of water and we sit and talk. I think we talked once for maybe two and a half hours.
I think this quote is very good and I think it can help anyone if they need a little bit more determination to do something the would like to do. Even if the problem is big or small I think this quote can help you. Because Eleanor Roosevelt knew what she was talking bout when she said this quote. English is really cool and I ummm… I think this is where I stop.

  13. “Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”
    ~Vince Lombardi

This quote by Vince Lombardi relates to our volleyball team. The team is made up of eleven people, and each person needs to be part of the team for it to be whole. If one person decides they do not want to try, or do not feel like cheering everyone else on, the entire team takes the hit. Every teammate needs to show how much they care for the team to show they care. Every teammate needs to show how much they want it for the team to show we want it. There is no room for someone who does not want to be there or feels like they have something better to do. Volleyball is harder than other sports to make up for one person’s mistakes. It is impossible to hide a person on the court and never give them the ball. The other team hits at every player on our team, so we all need to be ready to play every minute of the game. Coach can sit someone on the bench and never put them in, but even people on the bench have to work for us to win the games. Their job is to get everyone pumped for the game and excited to be there. They have to pick their teammates up if they get down on themselves and keep the team focused on what we need to do. Our volleyball team is made up of eleven people. Each person on that team does whatever they can to make the team as great as can be, and together we will go nowhere but up, all the way to State 2010.

  15. "You must pick things you think you cannot do" ~ Eleanor Roosevelt. This quote to me means a lot because in my mind there are things I know that I can’t do...and by doing them so much how to improve? I might pick something that I don't think I could do, or may be good at just to see my skills. If my skills are not good in that...keep trying...improve them! This quote reminds me a lot of my grandpa. He tells me to keep trying something even though I don’t think I can do it! If I fail, try again! And yes, when you fail at something there is either shame or the will to give up.
Sometimes there is something in my head that tells me to keep trying…even if I get embarrassed. Most of my situations that involve this quote would be an art project. I love to draw but I don’t always make the picture look like the person, or the object I am copying. I will throw it away, but later on I will do it again. I like the challenge of that, I even STINK at coloring and painting…but I don’t give up…and when I do, I usually try again! This quote is very helpful, unless you don’t want any of the advice. To be honest, I don’t always take it…but in this case I do (obviously). Anyway, a quote like this could help anyone who thinks they can’t do something, but really they could…just give it a try.

  18. When everyone works together communities, countries, and the world seem to be a better place. I think Vince Lombardi’s quote about group efforts helping teams, societies, and civilizations work is true because the more people that work together to solve something usually results in the problem either being solved or made to where the problem is insignificant. I believe that if countries used this idea to solve issues instead of just declaring war on each other it would save a lot of lives because most issues that countries fight over could be fixed easily through the ability to work together and tolerate each other. When it comes to sports teams I think that this could be done the easiest because if you play as a team you will win tons more games than if you just depend on one or two members of the team to do all of the work. If you practice together and build a good teamwork based team you will be able to get over the bumps in the season and make everyone feel like they have done something to help the team. Bringing people together in society might be the hardest task due to the fact that some opinions can be so much different that it is hard to find any common feelings on a certain subject. When societies do work together it is usually noticeable, for instance crime rates may go down, kids may go from being “bad” to being a good member of the community, and other changes that are noticeable. So in conclusion I think that if you work together there will be more good changes than bad.

  19. The quote relates to me through my childhood. The quote in my opinion reminds me of Thomas the Train when he said "I think I can, I think I can." I did try things I thought I could never do. Like playing basketball. Most of my friends in sixth grade were out for basketball, and I was wondering how much fun it would be. Turns it out it was overly fun, got tons of great memories, and found out I was okay at it. Steph, Jaime, Jesseca, and me in a basketball tournament tried our hardest to get first place. Even though we got second, we danced around because we tried and used teamwork. I tried to make every shot I threw in the air, I didn’t make every shot, but at least I tried. One of the things I am willing to try is to take motorcycle lessons in order to get a motorcycle license. Then try to ride a motorcycle without injuring myself. After I try to drive/operate one, I’ll “try” to own one. I tried to get in on a racetrack only allowed on by sixteen years old and up, and somehow I got in even though I was fifteen. I think the quote from Eleanor Roosevelt means live life to the fullest, so that you don’t have regrets for not doing the things you wanted to do. But you could get regrets for something that you did try and it turned out badly. Either way, you tried at it.

  20. Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes teamwork, a company work, a society work, a civilization work. ~Vince Lombardi

Individual commitment I think is very important. With individual commitment in a group their objectives get accomplished. To have a commitment you must be responsible, trustworthy, and have respect for others in your group. A person must also be able to listen and give ideas to other members. Two brains are usually better than one. Many employers will group their employees together to work on projects or presentations. Being able to work well with others is something most employers are looking for. It is the same with teachers and students. To be employed is a huge commitment, a person has to be to work on time and do their work. Most of the time one persons’ job relies on another person’s.

Individual commitment such as the above I have seen in Mrs. Frahm’s commitment in her quest for Pure Water for All. She has joined a group of people to help other people in countries with poor water conditions. I have seen individual commitment at church when our church youth group joins together to raise money during Souper Bowl of Caring. We all work toward one goal and commitment to help other people.

Our East Central marching band field shows and competitions are something the public always looks forward to watching. Without the commitment from the musicians and the color guard and the directors there would not be much of a band. I am trying something new this year that takes commitment, which is All-State Choir Music I decided I could sing with them, but I have a previous commitment to the FFA Soils Team. So while learning and practicing with the Soils Team I will also be trying to make all of the All-State practices and do as much practice individually as I can. Another great thing about individual commitment is the recognition. Most of the time people get recognized for their commitment, and it’s usually a good feeling. Even a relationship needs commitment, if your not committed, there really is no point is there? Without individual commitment not much would get accomplished.

  24. "You must do things you think you cannot do” Eleanor Roosevelt Some things in life just suck, or things you may not want to do. Sometimes you just think, “Oh this is to hard I can not do this.” Like today I was sitting in English it was just hot as hell even with the fan blowing at me. We had to do this dumb reading thing that I did not even get. I got stuck in a group with a bunch of smart people though and got helped out. I do not even like English that much. I really do not like to read or write. But some things you just got to do to graduate. Example like this thing that I am typing right now I really don’t want to do this except that i am sitting in this beautiful lab with the ac blowing right at me and Mrs. Rickords smells really good to day. Just something you have to put up with. School I really do not want to come to school at all but if you want a job someday you will just have to do things u don’t want to do. Like I cannot type very well but I have to in some classes. I really cannot run but in gym you have to. I really do not like school lunches but if I want to not be Hungary you will just have to choke it down no matter what it tastes like. So you must do things you think you cannot do.

  38. When Eleanor Roosevelt says “ You must do things you think you can not do.” I think she means if you do not try new things you will not achieve a lot. If you keep doing things you know you can do you will not be able to reach you full abilities; therefore you try things you think you can not do you will surprise yourself. You are capable of doing amazing things you just have to try. But if you fail do not give up right away keep trying. At least try three or four times before giving up. Cause if you give up right away you are not trying your hardest and people that give up do not accomplish a lot in life. Cause when I run the ball if I just give up after one run fails. I would not be a good running back. Then we would not be the team we are today. If I give up at defense after I miss a tackle we might not won the games we won; therefore I would not be a good teammate. Not only I rely on myself on the football field my teammates and the coaches and community also relies in me. So I have to try my best or what kind of person would I be? I will answer my own question. I would not be a very good one. That is what I think of this saying. I hope my lovely teacher Mrs. Rickords likes this blog.
